Esme
Esme has a woven willow frame reinforced by steel rods.  Her sides are
woven straw that has been covered in a solid tapestry stitch.  She originally
had foam and straw fruit basted to one side.  This has been replaced with
ZenDixie original needlepoint applique of a hamsa.  (A mosic emblem
signifying being cared for and watched over by God.)  There is a smaller
original design tapestry applique of hearts stitched to one side of the willow
frame.  The lining is new.  Her dimensions are 11" at her widest point by  9"
excluding her handle (14.5 with her handle) by 3.25.  The handles are
original. Click on the pictures for a larger image.

This is Esme.  She was originally the summer purse for a church lady
who chose her from all the other straw purses at Harvey's because of
the collection of straw and foam fruit that was sewn to her side.  The
church lady, whose name was Estelle, had a favorite Bible verse:
Galatians 5:22-23  "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and
self-control. Against such things there is no law."  Estelle adored
Esme because the apple, grapes, pear and pineapple reminded her
of that verse.  She kept her for years, putting rolled stockings inside
and wrapping her carefully with tissue when the weather got colder
and it was time to get out her leather bag for Fall.   When Esme got a
little too ragged and faded to carry downtown, Estelle couldn't bear to
part with her and simply wrapped her up and stored her away, where
she  remained until a great-niece went through her late aunt's things
one May afternoon.  She only saw the frayed, faded fruit and tattered
checked lining.  It never occurred to her that Esme was a long loved
treasure, and so Esme ended up in a church rumble sale.
